English as a Second Language Classes (ESL) We are currently accepting enrollment for ESL Classes, Click Here! According to the U.S. Census Bureau, at least 7% of people in this area speak little or no English. Things most of us take for granted - filling out a job application, talking to a doctor - are difficult or impossible for them. Our ESL program goes beyond just teaching the language and teaches them practical life skills for living in the U.S. Our most dominant program is our adult education program that is funded by Texas Education Agency. The program is the EL Civics where we combine the teaching of Civics and English Literacy. Our target group of people is immigrants with limited English proficiency. Most of our clients do not speak any English when they come to us. We work with them to the point where they are capable of functioning within their community and speaking with their children’s teachers. We have been funded the past three years by this funding source. The basic criteria to continue receiving the funds is that we must train over 500 hundred students per year and 65% must show progress of at least one level. In addition they must spend a minimum of 40,000 hours in the classroom in the aggregate. This proves to be quite a challenge but we have done well in meeting these objectives. We offer GED classes to those age 18 and above. Studies show that on average, adults without a high school diploma or GED equivalent earn $7,000 a year less than their peers. Our self-paced program give adult students lots of individual attention, helping them overcome barriers, pass the GED exam, and find a better life. Family Computer Literacy: In a six-week course, we help parents and kids learn the basics of working with computer, with a focus on the skills they need in the Houston Independent School District. Through these classes, we bring technology to poor urban areas and to people who may never have otherwise been able to access it. Future Plans Advanced ESL courses – Providing advanced ESL courses with emphasis on industry related English, in partnership with participating businesses, will enhance the effectiveness of RAH in achieving its goal. Computer Training in Spanish – To better serve the surrounding Hispanic community, we will offer the Microsoft Tools instructional course in Spanish. This will encourage participation by potential and current ESL students in other RAH programs. Advanced Technology Training – In the past, RAH offered A+ Certification and the CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) program. As a CISCO Local Networking Academy, RAH is authorized to teach Network Essentials and Panduit Cabling. RAH is evaluating the training needs associated with recent technological advances in order to offer courses which prepare students for the current and future technological demands of the job market.
