Reach Across Houston (RAH) is a Christian-faith based organization founded in 1992 to work with low-income members of the community, helping them gain skills needed to secure meaningful employment.

Our target group of people is immigrants with limited English proficiency. Most of our clients do not speak any English when they come to us. We work with them to the point where they are capable of functioning within their community and speaking with their children’s teachers.

As a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, RAH focuses on clients in the Northline area of Houston, including Fifth Ward, the Heights, Acres Homes and southern Greenspoint.

RAH calls a 20,000 square-foot metal and brick facility home. RAH is located at 9808 Bauman Road in Houston, Texas, between Tidwell and Parker, The Hardy Toll Road and Interstate 45.

We have been in this location since April 2003. Our facility has 7 classrooms, 8 offices, a large room for social activities, and a computer lab. We have a Church in the facility which holds regular services.

Our most dominant training program is our adult education program that is funded by Texas Education Agency. The program is the EL Civics where we combine the teaching of Civics and English Literacy.

We have been funded the past three years by this funding source. The basic criteria to continue receiving the funds is that we must train over 500 hundred students per year and 65% must show progress of at least one level. In addition they must spend a minimum of 40,000 hours in the classroom in the aggregate. This proves to be a challenge but we have done well in meeting these objectives.

Our staff today consists of AmeriCorps members who teach and are paid by Houston READ Commission and Reach, who contribute a minimal fee to the READ Commission for these individuals. They must spend at least 1,700 hours per year each to stay in the program at our site. Our cost is $3,750.00 per year each.

We have teachers and an IT Technician who are paid part-time employees. We also have volunteers serving in different support capacities at Reach Across Houston.

RAH answers to a Board of Directors that is comprised of individuals involved in business, education and the community. An Advisory Board comprised of individuals who have distinguished themselves in youth development and adult education.

We “reach across” lines of race, religion, language and social class to bring hope and opportunities within the grasp of all.
